🌤️ Guten Morgen, Berlin!

Here’s your quick update on what’s happening around the city on Tuesday, August 26 - from urgent alerts to stories in the subreddit. Let’s dive in.

🇩🇪 Rail replacement service from Monday on S-Bahn lines in north-east Berlin

Major S-Bahn disruptions hit northeast Berlin from early Monday as a new electronic signal box at Nordkreuz is commissioned: S8 trains between Pankow and Karow/Hohen Neuendorf will be replaced by accessible buses until the morning of 5 September; S2 and S26 are also suspended between Pankow and Karow with bus replacements. Separately, Blankenfelde–Mahlow has bus service until 22 September, and Ringbahn works mean buses run between Greifswalder Straße and Gesundbrunnen until 8 September (22:00); S-Bahn advises tram and U‑bahn alternatives. 🇩🇪 Berlin subway station Mohrenstraße to be renamed in December

Berlin's Mohrenstraße U‑bahn station will be renamed Anton‑Wilhelm‑Amo‑Straße at the December 2025 timetable change, matching last weekend’s official renaming of the street after Anton Wilhelm Amo, the first known Black philosopher in Germany. Temporary overlays are already on the U2 platform; whether the station will also get a decolonial memorial is unclear and the BVG says it was not informed. The move follows a 2020 district vote and years of legal disputes over the term "Mohr." (rbb24, 2 minute read)

🇩🇪 Drones, wastewater, recycling - Berlin tests sustainable ideas for the future

Berlin on Aug. 25, 2025 announced €9 million in funding for three real-world "Reallabor" pilots over three years to test sustainable urban solutions: B(e)Ware will reintegrate regional reclaimed building materials in three construction projects (including a Müggelsee rescue station); IWIQ will trial greywater reuse and wastewater heat recovery for neighbourhoods; and U‑Space Berlin will test drone delivery of light medical goods and food in a Tempelhof‑Schöneberg industrial area to shorten routes and ease traffic (56 projects applied). 💬 What Berliners Are Talking About

🚃 Fun Fact: East Berliners nicknamed one model of the S-Bahn trains “Cola Dosen” (“Coke Cans”) due to their bright red color – even after those trains were repainted in the traditional yellow-red, the quirky nickname stuck.
