🗑️ Over 1,000 Illegal Dumping Fines

Berlin districts issued over 1,000 fines for illegal dumping last year, collecting €300,000. Most neighborhoods now deploy "Waste-Watchers" to combat the accumulation of discarded furniture and commercial rubble in public parks. Despite these patrols, ten of twelve district offices report the sanitation problem remains severe, as offenders typically dump materials at night to avoid witnesses. (Tagesspiegel)

Financial penalties for environmental violations have recently increased. Under an updated catalog approved by the Berlin Senate, discarding a single cigarette now can trigger a €250 fine. Illegally dumping a car tire can cost up to €700. The municipal cleaning service removed roughly 54,000 cubic meters of illegal waste citywide in 2024. (Berlin.de)

Cleaning up costs Berlin taxpayers nearly €10 million annually. As the September state elections approach, street cleanliness is becoming a central campaign issue. Candidates are debating strategies to reform waste management. Their proposals focus on stronger municipal patrols and expanding free bulk trash pickup options. (B.Z.)

💣 Police Secure 1.5 Tonnes of WWII Shells

Police secured 59 unexploded Soviet-design artillery shells weighing 1.5 tonnes in Pankow. The 122-millimeter projectiles were discovered partially buried near Wiltbergstraße. Specialized units from the State Office of Criminal Investigation cordoned off the area and safely removed the World War II ammunition piece by piece. Officials confirmed there was no immediate threat to the public. (Euronews.com)

The shells were discovered by a civilian treasure hunter whose metal detector picked up the buried ammunition while he was searching for old military artifacts. After digging up the first rusted projectile on Friday morning, the man alerted local authorities. Private searches for war artifacts with metal detectors are strictly prohibited under Berlin law because of the high risk of accidental detonation. (B.Z. – Die Stimme Berlins)

The recovered munitions await controlled detonation at the city's designated Grunewald blasting site. Discoveries of this scale require complex logistics, though smaller ordnance finds remain routine across the region. Between 1947 and 2018, explosive experts defused or destroyed more than 1.8 million pieces of unexploded wartime explosives in Berlin. (Wikipedia)

🚨 Fourth Street Shooting in Berlin

Berlin saw its fourth street shooting in just days on Monday night. In Kreuzberg, an unknown assailant fired toward a playground on Urbanstraße. Minutes later, men leaving a Mercedes opened fire on a fleeing e-scooter rider on Graefestraße. A separate armed dispute also broke out outside a pub in Reinickendorf. No injuries were reported, and all suspects escaped. (Tagesspiegel)

The gunfire follows a daylight drive-by shooting last Thursday in the same Kreuzberg neighborhood, reportedly targeting a car carrying members of the Remmo family. Berlin is facing a sharp escalation in gang violence. Authorities recorded 515 shooting incidents in 2025, up 68 percent from the previous year, with organized extortion of Turkish and Kurdish shopkeepers seen as a major driver. (rbb24)

The 7th Homicide Commission is investigating the attacks alongside “Ferrum,” a police unit created to dismantle the illegal firearms trade. Detectives are analyzing bullet casings and urgently seeking dashcam footage of the fleeing Mercedes. The task force has recently carried out dozens of arrest warrants and seized numerous weapons as authorities try to contain the escalating turf wars. (TAG24)
