🇩🇪 PFAS detected in Berlin and Brandenburg water

An environmental group found per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) in almost all tested water samples in Berlin and Brandenburg. Nationwide, 42 of 46 samples contained PFAS. Current legal limits were not exceeded. Some readings (in Zeuthen) surpassed new limits that take effect from January 2026. Berlin’s utility said tap water remains safe and treatment is in place at Tegel. (rbb24)

PFAS are a large class of synthetic chemicals developed since the 1940s for their water-, oil-, and heat-resistant properties. They’re found in things like nonstick cookware, waterproof clothing, food packaging, firefighting foams, and cosmetics. Because PFAS do not easily degrade, they persist in the environment and the human body—earning the nickname “forever chemicals”.

Exposure can occur through contaminated water, food, or air and has been linked to liver damage, immune dysfunction, developmental delays, thyroid disruption, and certain cancers. Their persistence and toxicity have made PFAS a major environmental and public health concern. (ATSDR)

🇩🇪 Heimstaden caves in to hundreds of disputes over excessive rents

Heimstaden is conceding in many Berlin rent disputes. The landlord has often cited “comprehensive modernization” to bypass the rent brake, but courts and negotiations have forced cuts in hundreds of cases. A Neukölln couple saw their rent drop from 1,400 to about 700 euros, and 111 of 120 recent Heimstaden listings exceeded rent-brake thresholds. (rbb24)

Berlin’s supply-demand imbalance intensifies these tensions. The city’s 2024 median asking rent rose by 1.75 euros to 15.74 euros per square meter. While only 15,965 homes were completed in 2023, population still grew by 26,951 people that year, sustaining pressure on advertised rents and move-in pricing. (Berlin.de)

These findings suggest landlords will keep testing boundaries until enforcement raises the cost of noncompliance. The new Berlin review office already indicates how widespread overcharging can be: in six months, 177 of 190 reviewed contracts showed excessive rents, including 120 cases more than 50 percent above the local benchmark. 🇩🇪 250 euros for a cigarette, up to 15,000 euros for a fridge. Senate decides on higher fines for illegal waste in Berlin.

Berlin’s Senate approved a tougher fine schedule for illegal waste. Dropping a cigarette butt will cost up to 250 euros, a discarded tyre 700 euros, and hazardous bulky or electronic waste 1,000 to 15,000 euros. Large outlets must offer reusable to‑go cups or face 750 euros. The rules start after official publication, officials said. (Tagesspiegel)

The Berlin city cleaning service (Berliner Stadtreinigung, BSR) removed about 54,000 cubic meters of illegal deposits in 2024, up from roughly 50,000 in 2023. Cleanup cost an estimated 10.3 million euros in 2024 versus 9.7 million in 2023. Officials add many dumps stem from rogue commercial operators seeking to avoid disposal fees. (BSR)

The tougher penalties aim to deter littering and shift costs from taxpayers toward polluters. The European Parliament notes a single cigarette butt can contaminate 500 to 1,000 liters of water and backs extended producer responsibility for tobacco‑filter cleanup costs. (European Parliament)
