📣 Tens of Thousands March for Women’s Day

Tens of thousands took to the streets of Berlin on Sunday to mark International Women’s Day. The largest demonstration, organized by an alliance of trade unions and civic initiatives, drew around 30,000 participants. Marchers headed to the Rotes Rathaus, Berlin’s city hall, under the slogan “Feminist, in solidarity, trade unionist.” (Ntv)

The demonstrations drew attention to persistent inequalities in everyday life, especially around work and pay. In Germany, women still earn about 16% less than men on average. At the same time, nearly three-quarters of working mothers are employed part-time, often not by choice but because of structural and social constraints, according to federal officials. (Yahoo)

Union leaders also warned that long-established labour protections, including the eight-hour workday and paid sick leave, are under growing pressure from political and business interests. Activists expressed concern about current debates over working time and what they see as the dismissive portrayal of reduced hours as simply a lifestyle preference. (DIE ZEIT)

🥙 Doner Kebab Prices Drop

Doner kebab prices in Berlin have dropped by 50 cents to €1 at select local food stands, reversing a nationwide trend of price hikes. The Association of Doner Producers in Germany claims the price reductions primarily affect chicken kebabs due to a recent decrease in wholesale poultry costs. (rbb24)

In 2025, the average kebab in Germany cost €7.11, marking a 47% increase compared to four years prior. Despite this inflation, nationwide order volumes still increased by 15% between 2021 and 2025. Experts observe that a massive oversupply of vendors in the capital is driving intense market competition among new establishments. (Berliner Kurier)

A permanent price decrease remains unlikely since beef costs increased by nearly 25% in January compared to the previous year. Berlin often acts as a trendsetter for the broader German market, showcasing both aggressive budget competition and a rising consumer acceptance of premium gourmet kebabs priced at €12 or more. 🚾 Free Menstrual Products in Public Restrooms

Berlin has started a pilot project offering free menstrual products in five staffed public toilets. Together with toilet operator Wall GmbH, the city’s environmental department is testing the distribution of tampons and pads at central locations including Alexanderplatz, Spandauer Markt, and the Gedächtniskirche in Charlottenburg. (berlin.de)

The trial, which began at the start of the year, is designed to test whether providing these products is practical and how strong public demand is. For now, the scheme is limited to staffed facilities, where on-site personnel can help oversee distribution and day-to-day operations. (Ntv)

After the pilot ends, the Berlin government will evaluate the results and decide whether to expand the program permanently. The aim is to make menstrual products as standard in staffed public toilets as toilet paper. (tagesschau.de)
