Berlin is ending free-floating e-scooter parking on sidewalks, transitioning the city to a system of mandatory parking stations. The local Senate reached this agreement with the regional association for the blind to eliminate widespread tripping hazards. Officials plan to implement the ban district by district, aiming for a complete transition across the capital by 2035. (Berliner Kurier)
Recent traffic data reveals that e-scooters account for just 0.1 percent of all trips in the capital, yet over half of them obstruct pathways when left outside fixed stations. To solve this, the new sharing strategy involves building up to 3,000 fixed hubs. However, budget cuts threaten the rapid expansion of these designated parking zones. (Tagesspiegel)
The ten-year timeline remains contested. The blind association formally accepted the station model but called the 2035 target unacceptable given the daily physical risks to pedestrians. The group vows to push the government for a much faster rollout. Concurrently, fleet operators warn that eliminating spontaneous drop-offs threatens their entire business model. (rbb24)
Recorded crime in Berlin fell by 6.7% to around 502,700 cases in 2025, the lowest level in a decade outside the pandemic years. The decline was driven mainly by fewer thefts, but the broader trend was eclipsed by a rise in gun-related crime. Police recorded 1,119 firearm offenses last year, up 68% from the year before, including 515 cases in which shots were actually fired. (Berliner Kurier)
Homicides also rose sharply, up 41% to 165 cases. However, police said 79 of those deaths were linked to a single palliative care doctor suspected of killing patients. Knife crime increased slightly across the city overall, but fell by as much as 45% inside three newly created weapons prohibition zones. Sexual offenses and domestic violence also increased, though authorities say part of that rise may reflect higher reporting rates. (berlin.de)
In response, Berlin Interior Senator Iris Spranger announced a zero-tolerance approach to illegal weapons and said the city will push for tighter gun laws at the federal level. Locally, authorities have started revoking driver’s licenses from convicted knife offenders and are now using electronic ankle monitors to track high-risk individuals. (Tagesspiegel)
The International Energy Agency approved a record release of 400 million barrels from emergency oil reserves to help stabilize global markets as the war with Iran escalates. Germany, Japan, and Austria are among the 32 member nations drawing on their strategic stockpiles, with Berlin contributing roughly 19.5 million barrels to the coordinated effort. (Reuters)
The move comes after major disruptions in the Persian Gulf, where Iranian military strikes on commercial vessels have effectively shut down the Strait of Hormuz. The chokepoint normally carries about 20.1 million barrels of oil per day, accounting for nearly 27% of global seaborne petroleum trade. (Statista)
While there is no immediate local shortage, the intervention seeks to lower the inflation hitting Berlin’s commuters and businesses as fuel prices recently crossed the €2.00 mark. To protect consumers from sharp fuel price swings, Germany and Austria have introduced strict limits on how often gas stations can raise prices while markets wait for physical deliveries to resume.
