🏗️ New Tower Planned for Warschauer Brücke

Berlin has opened a public consultation (until April 14) for a 167-meter residential tower at Warschauer Brücke. The project on Rudolfstraße includes around 1,000 apartments, with 30% set aside as social housing. Local district officials have called the tower a “disaster” for the neighborhood and a blow to local democracy. (rbb24)

Designed by Henning Larsen, the 52-story tower utilizes brick and ceramic facades to reflect the area’s industrial heritage. The plan features high-performance soundproofing to mitigate rail noise, a central public square with heat-reducing materials, and a daycare center integrated into a green residential courtyard. (Entwicklungsstadt)

The Senate seized control of the project from the district in 2025 to fast-track housing construction. Despite 69 previous public submissions regarding microclimates and biodiversity, the current plans remain largely unchanged. Residents now have a final window to submit feedback on the development’s feasibility. (BILD)

🏢 Taliban Take Over Afghan Embassy in Berlin

A Taliban member has quietly taken control of the Afghan Embassy in Berlin. Nebrasul H., who arrived in Germany last summer as a consular official, is now effectively running the embassy behind the scenes. That would make Germany the first EU country where the group effectively controls a diplomatic mission. (rbb24)

The shift appears to have happened without the knowledge or approval of the German government. To avoid drawing attention, the Taliban reportedly reassigned the former ambassador to a local role while keeping him as the public face of the embassy. This allowed the change in power to go largely unnoticed by authorities, who do not officially recognize the Taliban government. (DW)

The situation adds another layer of complexity to Berlin’s already delicate dealings with the regime. Interior Minister Alexander Dobrindt has been working with Taliban officials on deportations, and under a recent agreement, Germany returned 20 convicted Afghan offenders to Afghanistan in late February. 🚧 Activists Threaten Görli Fence on May 1

Far-left activists in Berlin are mobilizing for the traditional May 1 demonstration, explicitly threatening to attack the new fence at Görlitzer Park. Organizers expect tens of thousands to march along a new route past the park, distributing posters that feature bolt cutters and declaring their intent to test its resistance. (B.Z. – Die Stimme Berlins)

The Berlin Senate initiated the fencing project and nightly park closures to combat severe drug dealing and violent crime in the area. Activists and left-wing groups strongly oppose the measure, arguing it displaces crime into surrounding residential neighborhoods and deprives local youth of a non-commercial gathering space. (The Berliner)

Law enforcement is preparing for a major operation to prevent the riots that historically accompany the May 1 march. City officials have kept the name of the construction company building the fence secret due to security concerns, as organizers actively call for civil disobedience and direct interference with the project. 🫶 Struggling to Build Meaningful Connections?

Making real friends in Berlin is hard. Especially if you’re an expat in your 20s to 40s. You go out, meet new people and put in effort — but after a few meetups, the relationships slowly fade. You have no one to call in an emergency and no group that truly has your back.

Inner Circle is a private community for expats in Berlin who want deeper, lasting connections. When you join, you’re placed in a hand-selected group of 8 people who meet regularly. Seeing the same people over time makes it easier to build trust, move past small talk, and form real friendships. Those conversations turn strangers into people you can rely on.

Members also get access to spontaneous hangouts, community events, and more. If you're looking to build deep connections that last, apply to join. Every application is reviewed by a human.
