🕺 Good Friday Dancing Bans

Public dancing and loud entertainment are temporarily banned across Berlin and Brandenburg this Easter weekend. Under German law, Good Friday is designated a protected “silent holiday,” requiring venues to pause music and celebrations. In Berlin, the restriction applies from 4 a.m. to 9 p.m. on Friday. (rbb24)

The rules are stricter in neighboring Brandenburg, where the ban runs from midnight on Friday until 4 a.m. on Saturday. During this period, public dance events, music-heavy sporting broadcasts, and most forms of commercial entertainment without artistic or educational purpose are prohibited, effectively enforcing a 24-hour shutdown. (Tagesspiegel)

The restrictions remain controversial. Nightlife advocates and secular groups argue that enforcing Christian mourning traditions in a diverse, secular society is outdated and economically harmful. Club operators continue to lobby lawmakers to abolish the decades-old rules. (DW.com)

🌿 Evaluating Cannabis Legalization

Germany’s two-year review of its partial cannabis legalization paints a mixed picture: consumption remains broadly stable, while conservative politicians are intensifying calls to roll back the law. The government-commissioned EKOCAN report found no meaningful increase in recreational use among young people. Critics say efforts to prevent addiction among young people have been scaled back. (DW.com)

Germany partially legalized recreational cannabis two years ago, allowing regulated sales through licensed outlets. At the same time, the illicit market’s share has edged down slightly, but regulatory constraints have driven an increase in medical cannabis imports. Volumes jumped 198% since 2024, reaching 200 tonnes. With tightly regulated cultivation clubs struggling to meet demand, many consumers are turning to telemedicine platforms to obtain prescriptions. (Business of Cannabis)

The findings are fueling tensions within the coalition government, as conservatives push for a full repeal of the legislation. Lawmakers are now expected to debate stricter THC limits for medical prescriptions, while recent court rulings have begun cracking down on online platforms illegally promoting cannabis treatments. ⚠️ Tempelhof Refugee Center Faces Turmoil

Three refugees died from alcohol poisoning last year at the mass shelter located at Berlin’s former Tempelhof airport. Authorities also confirmed two suicides linked to the facility, along with two recent suicide attempts. Officials say a group of roughly 50 to 60 older residents struggles with severe alcohol dependency, often leading to violent incidents that require police intervention. (rbb24)

The site currently houses around 1,050 people in hangars and containers, with an additional 775 accommodated in temporary housing elsewhere. Social Senator Cansel Kiziltepe acknowledged that the hangars offer poor conditions for long-term integration but said the city cannot yet afford to close the facility. In response, administrators have reduced container occupancy from four to three people and deployed Ukrainian-speaking psychologists. (Tagesspiegel)

Tensions have recently escalated following an influx of new arrivals after the closure of the Tegel refugee center. Staff report that while hard alcohol is banned on-site, consumption off the premises remains difficult to control and contributes to recurring violent clashes, including knife-related incidents. The government has introduced a targeted street outreach program aimed at supporting high-risk individuals and stabilizing conditions at the site. (Berliner Zeitung)
