🛢️ Russia Halts Kazakh Oil Transit to Germany

Russia will suspend the transit of Kazakh crude oil to Germany via the Druzhba pipeline starting May 1. Moscow has circulated updated export schedules reflecting the halt. The disruption affects the pipeline’s northern branch, cutting off deliveries that reached 2.15 million tonnes in 2025. German operators say they have already been notified of transport disruptions. (Reuters)

The cutoff puts pressure on the PCK Schwedt refinery, which supplies fuel to much of the Berlin-Brandenburg region. Germany turned to Kazakh imports after placing local subsidiaries of Rosneft under state trusteeship in 2022. Without this supply route, the refinery could see output fall to around 60 percent of its capacity. (rbb24)

Operators are now scrambling to ramp up alternative deliveries via the Baltic Sea. However, shipments through the port of Rostock currently cannot fully replace the missing volumes. This raises the risk of fuel shortages and higher fuel prices in the region as officials work to complete long-delayed upgrades to the Rostock–Schwedt pipeline network. (Berliner Zeitung)

🚨 Lower Crime in BVG 2025 Security Report

BVG reported a 16% drop in overall crime in 2025, recording 12,584 incidents, the lowest in a decade. This decline was largely driven by a sharp decrease in drug offenses and pickpocketing across the network's 1.1 billion passenger journeys. (Berliner Kurier)

Despite the general improvement, severe offenses increased. Sexual assaults reached their highest level since 2015, with 314 reported cases last year, up from 73 (in 2015). Coercion cases also nearly doubled over the same period, prompting concerns over passenger safety. (The Berliner)

To improve safety, the BVG is investing €105 million, deploying AI-powered surveillance cameras at stations like Kottbusser Tor to detect unauthorized access, fires, and emergencies. Additionally, officials plan to introduce a silent mobile SOS messenger system to help protect vulnerable passengers. (rbb24)

✈️ Security Council Convenes Over Jet Fuel Shortage

German Chancellor Friedrich Merz is urgently convening the National Security Council to address a growing jet fuel shortage. The crisis is linked to the ongoing conflict in Iran, which has severely disrupted shipping through the Strait of Hormuz, a critical chokepoint that carries around a fifth of global oil flows and is vital for Europe’s energy supply. (Politico)

Economy Minister Katherina Reiche says domestic supplies remain stable for now, but has launched emergency talks with fuel suppliers and aviation leaders. Germany depends heavily on imports, consuming more than 4.3 million tonnes of aviation fuel each year, leaving the sector exposed to prolonged disruptions. (ReportLinker)

The strain is already forcing changes across the aviation industry. Lufthansa plans to retire several older, fuel-inefficient long-haul aircraft to conserve resources. Even if shipping disruptions ease soon, experts warn that travellers are likely to face higher ticket prices and possible route cuts ahead of the busy summer season. (nTV)
